Ten years ago, Islamic extremist groups took control of northern Mali and forced out the Christian population. The Christian community has never fully recovered, and still lives with the threat of violent attacks. Mali has risen several places on the World Watch List this year, as an unstable government has empowered violent Islamic extremist groups. They abduct, kill and enslave people, as well as recruiting young boys. Even in safer areas, believers from Muslim backgrounds will face intense pressure from their families to give up their faith.
